There’s a spreadsheet in every serious builder’s head, even if it never gets written down. Every accessory, every bracket, every pound gets weighed against the number on the dyno sheet, and AC is usually first on the chopping block. Delete the compressor, delete the belt load, delete the evaporator box, and you’ve bought yourself a few free horsepower and a cleaner engine bay for car show quality. To find out what’s actually changed with the company’s newest platform, and whether it changes that horsepower math, we sat down with Rick Love, who handles technical and engineering questions for Vintage Air and has become the company’s go-to voice for explaining what separates Gen 5 from the Gen IV systems that came before it.

Vintage Air’s Gen IV system has been the backbone of the aftermarket climate control world for years, and for good reason. It’s proven, it’s widely supported, and it’s found its way into more restomods, resto-rods, and street trucks than almost any other AC platform on the market, including a Vintage Air Gen V system tucked into the Cassar Performance & Design C10 SS/R we featured recently. But proven doesn’t mean finished, and the company set out to build something that pushed past what Gen IV could do, without abandoning what made it work in the first place.
Ford GT Technology Behind the Gen 5 Climate Control System
“Vintage Air has always been focused on moving forward technologically and in production techniques while constantly looking for ways to improve system performance,” Love said. The starting point, interestingly, wasn’t a hot rod at all. It was the Ford GT. Vintage Air designed and manufactured the climate control system for Ford’s modern supercar, and a lot of what the engineering team learned building a system for a $500,000 exotic made its way into the platform now sitting behind dashboards in Chevelles, Broncos, and tri-fives across the country.
It’s a good reminder of what Vintage Air actually is at this point. It’s easy to think of the company as a hot rod parts supplier, but they’re also building climate control for a car that costs more than most houses, and the same engineering discipline that requires shows up whether the end customer is running down pit lane or cruising Main Street on a Friday night.
OEM-Quality Construction: Injection-Molded Cases and Blend Doors
That lineage shows up most clearly in how Vintage Air Gen 5 is built. Where Gen IV relied on more traditional case construction, Vintage Air Gen 5 moves to injection-molded cases across the Magnum series, which now underpins every current SureFit kit. That’s not a small change.



Injection molding lets Vintage Air integrate mounting points, sealing surfaces, and structural features directly into the case in ways that stamped or fabricated parts simply can’t match, and it brings a level of fit and finish that’s typically reserved for OEM parts, not aftermarket ones. The blend air doors got the same treatment. They’re injection molded too, and instead of felt seals, which have been the industry standard for decades, Gen 5 uses rubber seals molded directly onto the doors themselves.
“The blend air doors in the Magnum series evaporators are also injection molded, and feature rubber seals that are actually molded on the doors to improve sealing and longevity,” Love explained. It’s a detail that’s easy to overlook until you consider what felt seals do over ten or fifteen years of heat cycling, vibration, and UV exposure baking through a windshield. They wear. They compress. They stop sealing as well as they did on day one. A molded rubber door doesn’t have that problem, and that translates directly into a system that performs the same in year twelve as it did in year one.
The Magnum Max Blower: 20 Percent More Airflow, Noticeably Quieter


Then there’s the blower. The Magnum Max module, used in every Vintage Air Gen 5 SureFit application where dash space allows, runs a larger blower motor that Love says produces 20 percent more airflow than the standard Gen IV Magnum motor, consistent across the entire performance curve, not just at peak.

In practical terms, a Vintage Air Gen 5 system doesn’t need to run at full tilt to move the same air a Gen IV system needs high speed to produce. Drop the blower down a notch or two, and you’re still getting comparable airflow at a noise level that’s noticeably lower.
For anyone who’s cranked the fan up on a hot Texas afternoon and had to raise their voice over it, that’s the difference between a system you tolerate and one you forget is even running. It’s the kind of change that doesn’t show up on a spec sheet the way horsepower or torque numbers do, but it’s the difference builders and their passengers actually notice on a two-hour cruise in August.
Smarter Case Design Built for Long-Term Serviceability
The case redesign brings functional gains too. Improved condensate draining keeps water moving out instead of pooling, and removable covers give installers direct access to the heater and AC coils for service, a real departure from systems that need major disassembly just to inspect a coil. Multiple mounting bracket points add flexibility for the tight space behind a vintage dashboard.
Add OEM-style stepper motor door actuators, a block-type expansion valve for more precise refrigerant metering, and a solid-state blower speed control module, and the whole system reads less like a typical aftermarket kit and more like something that rolled off an OEM assembly line, because in a lot of ways, it did. Any shop that’s had to pull an entire dash apart to chase down a leaking evaporator on an older system will understand why that access panel alone is worth something.
One Control System Across the Entire Vintage Air Lineup
Perhaps the most significant change isn’t a physical part at all. It’s the control architecture. Gen 5 is built around an electronic control system shared across Vintage Air’s entire evaporator lineup, from the compact Mini all the way up to the Magnum Max, so builders can mix and match components without worrying whether a given control head will talk to a given evaporator.
Even SureFit kits, designed to bolt in with minimal modification, can be upgraded with optional control panels to match a specific dash layout or interior theme, the kind of flexibility that used to require custom fabrication and now comes baked in from the factory. Vintage Air publishes dedicated wiring diagrams for wiring the system’s trinary switch directly into Holley Sniper EFI systems, including a diagram specific to Sniper Gen 5, as well as diagrams for popular fan controllers such as Dakota Digital’s PAC 2750 and Derale’s PWM units. For builders running a modern EFI setup and a wired-in cooling fan controller, this means the AC system’s safety switch connects directly to the rest of the electronics under the hood rather than becoming its own isolated wiring project.




The Engineering Challenge Behind Gen 5
None of this came easy. Love was candid about where the real work happened during development. “Injection mold tooling offers the ability to integrate mounting points and interior features that dramatically improve production quality and durability, but require precision design and development,” he said. Before Vintage Air committed to cutting hard tooling, a genuinely expensive and hard-to-reverse decision, the engineering team spent countless hours modeling the cases and running virtual performance testing to make sure the geometry worked before a single physical mold was cut.
Is It Worth Upgrading From Gen IV to Gen 5?
So is Gen 5 worth it if you’ve already got a Gen IV system cooling your ride just fine? Love’s answer leans toward yes, particularly for anyone in a hotter climate. The performance gap from the larger blower motor is immediately noticeable, he said, and it comes with quieter day-to-day operation, better long-term door sealing, and tighter refrigerant control from the block expansion valve.
When asked which single feature the engineering team is proudest of, Love wouldn’t pick just one. “It would be difficult to call out one particular feature,” he said. “We are very proud of the huge overall improvements in performance, reliability, and flexibility that the new system provides.”
