
RestoMods 1957 Bel Air: 633 HP Big Block Chevy On Air Ride
A 1957 Chevy Bel Air on air ride does not need much help pulling attention in a parking lot. Drop a 633 hp big block behind it and finish the whole thing in Tuxedo Black, and the argument is over before it starts. The RestoMods 1957 Bel Air, badged RM35, is exactly that car.
RM35 is the latest sweepstakes build to roll out of RestoMods’ shop, and it runs the same playbook that made the 1969 Chevelle LSX giveaway worth paying attention to: real power, real driveability, name-brand parts picked for actual reasons, and a stance that reads right from ten feet or ten inches. Here is the full build, part by part, with the reasoning behind what got picked and how it changes the way this Tri-Five actually drives. Entry link at the bottom.

What Makes a 502 Big Block the Right Call for a Tri-Five?
Short answer: torque. A Blueprint Engines 502 crate puts 633 hp on the dyno with 612 lb-ft of torque, and torque is what a heavy body-on-frame car actually wants to move around. A small block Chevy 383 stroker will get close on peak numbers, but it will not shove a 3,600 lb Bel Air out of a corner the way a big block does. This is the correct displacement for the platform. If you want to see how far the big block idea goes on the modern side, Larry Hofer dropped an 8.1-liter big block into a C8 Corvette, which is proof the format still has believers.



The Blueprint crate arrives dyno-tested, with a hydraulic roller cam, aluminum heads, and runs on 91 octane pump gas, and Blueprint’s tag hangs off the front of every one. No mystery, no first-fire prayer. That matters when the car has to leave the driveway on a Saturday morning without babysitting. Blueprint has been expanding their platforms too, with their new iron block lineup covering SBC, BBC, Ford, and LS builds if you want to start from a bare foundation instead of a crate.
Feeding it is a FiTech Go EFI Classic Black 650 HP self-tuning throttle body EFI. This is the tuning story worth telling on any street-driven big block. A carbureted 502 will run great cold in the fall and start loading up the plugs at the same jetting when it hits 95 degrees in July. Self-tuning EFI eats that problem alive, from the first pull of the day to the last pull of the day. From ten feet, the black anodized throttle body still reads like a four-barrel, so you get modern drivability without turning the engine bay into a modern muscle car copy.
Fuel is drawn from a FiTech in-tank fuel system. That is the right way to do EFI on a classic. External inline pumps are loud, hot, and always the first thing to fail on a road trip. In-tank is quieter, cooler, and hidden.
The front dress is a CVF Racing serpentine accessory drive. On a big block sitting in a Tri-Five engine bay, packaging is the whole ballgame. A tight serpentine setup like this one gets the alternator, power steering, and A/C compressor pulled inboard so the belts clear the shock towers and the water pump inlet sits where the Ridetech front end wants it.

Wiring is a Painless Performance harness. Anybody who has spent an afternoon chasing a ground loop through 1957 factory wiring, or worse, through a previous owner’s hand-spliced mess, knows why a labeled, fused, modern harness is worth every dollar. Painless is the industry standard because it works.
The radiator is a big aluminum unit with dual electric fans. On a 633 hp big block in a car with a small factory grille opening, air management is not optional. Aluminum sheds heat faster than brass, and electric fans pull air even at idle in a parking lot.
Why a 4L80E and a 9-Inch, Not a TH400 and a 12-Bolt?
Answer: overdrive and parts support. A TH400 will live behind a 502 all day long, but you cruise at 3,500 rpm on the interstate with 3.50 gears and a 26-inch-tall rear tire. A Summit Racing 4L80E drops that freeway cruise to under 2,200 rpm with its .75 overdrive, which means the car gets driven instead of trailered.

The 4L80E is essentially a TH400 with an overdrive gearset and a lockup converter bolted to the back. Same clutch pack durability, same input shaft strength, same reputation for eating abuse. Behind a 633 hp big block, it is the right box. A 700R4 will not survive this kind of torque. A 200-4R can be built to hold it, but the aftermarket support is thin. The 4L80E is the correct call.
Power then runs through a Driveshaft Pro custom steel driveshaft into a Currie Enterprises 9-inch rear housing. 3.50 gears, Truetrac limited slip inside a nodular case.
The Ford 9-inch (Currie style) is the go-to for a reason. Third members swap in and out for gear changes without pulling the housing off the car, aftermarket axle support runs deep, and the pinion snout takes the torque hit from a 600-plus lb-ft engine without walking or wearing.
The Truetrac carrier is the right diff for a street-driven car making this kind of power. A spool would be faster off the line but useless on the street. A clutch-type posi eventually smokes its clutches under 600-plus lb-ft. Truetrac is helical-gear based, so it lasts, and it stays quiet in tight parking lot turns instead of ratcheting like a locker.
Exhaust: Sanderson Ceramics, MagnaFlow Stainless, and the Fun Button
Ceramic-coated Sanderson headers, 3-inch stainless from the collectors back, MagnaFlow stainless mufflers, and Doug’s Headers electric cutouts ahead of the mufflers. That is the recipe for a big block that behaves at cruise night and screams when you want it to.


Sanderson sizes big block Chevy headers for actual chassis fitment on a Tri-Five. That is the whole game. Off-the-shelf universal headers on a 502 in a 1957 frame turn into a puzzle that leaves scorched steering shafts and cracked collectors. Sanderson ships bolt-in for this exact swap.
The MagnaFlow stainless muffler is the modern muscle car standard because it lasts, it has the right note, and it will not drone your ears off at 70 mph. Deep at idle, mean at wide open throttle, quiet enough to hold a conversation on the highway. Doug’s electric cutouts on a rocker switch are the fun button. Closed, the car sounds serious. Open, it sounds like it wants to hurt someone. Both are correct answers.
RideTech Front to Back, and Why It Actually Matters
The whole chassis rides on RideTech. StrongArm tubular front control arms, a Ridetech 4-link out back, ShockWave air springs at all four corners, and the RidePro Airpod running the show from a hidden compressor and tank. Two-inch dropped spindles finish the front stance.



Here is what that combination actually changes. A stock 1957 Bel Air front end is parallel-arm with kingpins, and it steers like a shopping cart with a bad wheel. The Ridetech StrongArm swap gives you tubular upper and lower control arms, modern ball joints, better geometry, and coilover or air spring mounting points where they need to be. Bump steer goes away. Camber curves get sane. The car turns in like a car built after 1970.
Out back, the factory parallel leaf setup on a Tri-Five will axle-hop and wheel-hop the second you get serious with 600-plus lb-ft. A four-link with a Panhard bar plants the rear axle, controls torque reaction, and lets the ShockWave air springs handle ride quality without a leaf pack fighting them.

The ShockWave air spring is a monotube shock with an air bag wrapped around it on the same axis. That coaxial design is important. Bump control and ride height work together instead of against each other. Cheap airbag setups mount the shock separately and never ride right no matter how much you tune them. Ridetech gets this correct, and the RestoMods 1957 Bel Air feels the difference in every parking lot and every on-ramp.
Wilwood Brakes: Six Pistons Front, Four Pistons Rear
A 3,600 lb car with 633 horsepower needs real brakes. Wilwood 6-piston front calipers on drilled and slotted rotors, matching 4-piston rears. This is the whole reason the car is safe to drive hard.

Original 1957 drum brakes on a factory 235 inline six were marginal in 1957. Behind a big block making this kind of power, drums are dangerous. Modern six-piston Wilwood calipers give you even pad pressure across a bigger rotor, more heat capacity, and the pedal feel that tells you the car will actually stop when you get on it. This is not overkill. This is the correct spec for the horsepower.
Wheels and Tires: Salt Flat Special on Nittos
American Racing Salt Flat Special wheels, 18×8 front with 4.5-inch backspace, 20×10 rear with 4.5-inch backspace. Nitto NT555 G2 rubber, 235/40R18 front, 285/30R20 rear.

The Salt Flat Special is a nod back to the dry lakes cars that ran the salt before drag racing existed, and the design wears right on a Tri-Five body. The stagger, small in the front and big in the back, gives the car a proper rake without going overboard. The Nitto NT555 G2 is a real max-performance summer tire, not a hard-compound cruiser that squeals every time you turn a corner. On a 600-plus hp car, tire compound is not a detail. It is the difference between grip and lawn ornament.
Body: Tuxedo Black, Ringbrothers, Nomad, and RetroBright
Tuxedo Black paint front to back. That is a color that shows every wave, every fingerprint, every ripple in the sheet metal, so the bodywork underneath has to be dead flat. On the RestoMods 1957 Bel Air, it is. RestoMods went the same direction with their Back In Black 1970 Charger, and it is the same lesson both times: a flat, glassy black finish on a classic body is either the best-looking thing at the show or a hall pass to see every mistake.

Ringbrothers billet hood hinges replace the factory scissor setup. The Ring hinges open the hood on a smoother arc, hold it open without a prop rod, and clean up the engine bay visually because the factory hinge geometry gets ugly fast under a fresh paint job. Small detail, big visual payoff.
The rear bumper is a fresh Nomad-style piece. Cleaner lines than the stock ’57 bumper and a better match to the car’s stance sitting on the ground. Up front, Holley RetroBright LED headlights sit in the factory bezels. This is the right kind of headlight upgrade. Factory look, modern light output, actual visibility on a dark two-lane at 60 mph. Sealed beams are a period-correct hazard.
Interior: TMI, Dakota Digital, and Vintage Air
A full TMI Products interior anchors the cabin. Pro Series bench seat trimmed in Alcantara and leather, matching TMI door panels. TMI does this well. The bench looks period-appropriate from ten feet and feels modern the second you drop into it. Alcantara on the inserts is the right choice because your back stays put on a hard corner instead of sliding across slick vinyl.
Dakota Digital RTX Series gauges live in the factory dash cluster. This is the right call for a car like this. RTX gauges look analog under glass, but there is a digital brain behind them driving the tach, speedo, fuel, oil pressure, water temp, and volts off modern senders. You get vintage look and modern sensor accuracy, and the sweep on the speedo needle at part throttle actually tracks with what the car is doing.
Vintage Air A/C and heat under the dash. Nobody who has sat in a black ’57 in an August parking lot for twenty minutes will ever argue with this line item. Vintage Air keeps pushing the tech too, and the jump from Gen 4 to the new Gen 5 system is the kind of quieter, better-airflow upgrade that pays off inside a car with a big block heat soaking the firewall.
A Lokar bench bend shifter drops out of the column with the right shape for the bench seat, an American Retro 15-inch wheel takes the place of the factory bus wheel, and a Retrosound head unit runs stereo, Bluetooth, and USB out of what looks like a period-correct dash radio. That is how you do audio in a Tri-Five without cutting the dash apart.
