
NV3500: The Truth About GM’s Last 5-Speed
As we are wrapping up the Tremec Magnum 6-speed swap in project Ol’ Cotton, our LS powered 2004 RCSB Silverado going from work truck status to modern muscle truck status by getting rid of the old 5-speed NV3500 transmission, we’ve realized that we’ve spent several articles dogging on the old clunky 5-speed manual transmission (which we are not going to apologize for), but haven’t really explored this mass-produced truck-transmission and why the NV3500 is fine for a low-powered truck, but not so great in a performance application.
A Brief History
The NV3500 was made by New Venture Gear, a transmission manufacturer that formed in 1990 when General Motors and Chrysler partnered up to make a shared-platform manual transmission. The partnership combined Chrysler’s New Process Gear with GM’s transmission manufacturing plant in Muncie, Indiana.

The plan was to build a series of longitudinal manual transmissions for GM and Dodge light-duty and compact pickup trucks. The first was the 5-speed NV3500 that debuted in 1993 in GM light-duty half-ton and S-chassis compact trucks, and eventually expanded to other Chrysler applications and other versions such as the NV4500 and NV5600. The NV3500 remained in production until the 2006 model year when GM closed the Muncie plant.

In-Depth Design
The NV3500 uses a two-piece aluminum housing without access panels. This design keeps manufacturing costs down, but makes the transmission more difficult to service compared to conventional designs. It also means that the bellhousing is integral to the case, adding another challenge if one were to want to swap an NV3500 behind a non-GM or non-Dodge engine.

The transmission has fully synchronized forward and reverse gears and uses a single shift rail that is actuated by the shift lever that is mounted to the shift tower. The shifter position on all NV3500 transmissions sits forward on the transmission case, which works for interior space in trucks and 4x4s, but not so great if you were to swap one into a car application.

Where To Find An NV3500
The NV3500 was used in a wide range of GM and Dodge trucks, along with several Jeep applications. General Motors applications included 1993 through 1998 Chevrolet and GMC C1500 and K1500 trucks equipped with the 4.3-liter V6, 5.0-liter V8, or 5.7-liter V8. It was also used in 1999 through 2006 Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra half-ton trucks. It was also offered behind the 4.3-liter V6 in GM S-Series applications, including the S10 and Blazer, from 1993 through 2003.

Dodge applications included the 1994 through 2004 Dodge Ram 1500, the 1994 and 1995 Dodge Ram 2500 Light Duty, and the 1994 through 2004 Dodge Dakota. Jeep applications included the 2002 through 2004 Jeep Liberty with the 3.7L V6 and the 2000 through 2004 Jeep Wrangler with the 4.0 straight six.
NV3500 Gear Ratios
The NV3500 was offered in both wide ratio and close ratio gear sets. The wide ratio gearing option used in Dodge 1500 and GM full-size light trucks has a 4.02:1 first gear, 2.32:1 second gear, 1.40:1 third gear, 1.00:1 fourth gear, 0.73:1 fifth gear, and 3.55:1 reverse gear.
The close ratio gearing used in GM S10 and Blazer small trucks and the 2500 Light Duty Dodge Ram has a 3.49:1 first gear, 2.16:1 second gear, 1.40:1 third gear, 1.00:1 fourth gear, 0.73:1 fifth gear, and 3.55:1 reverse gear.

Keeping Things Slick
It is very important to use the correct transmission fluid to get a long life and crisp, positive shifts with an NV3500. The recommended oil for the NV3500 includes Mopar Manual Transmission Lubricant, part number 4874464, and GM Synchromesh Transmission Fluid, part number 12377916. The oil capacity is 4.2 pints (2.1 quarts), and the transmission weighs roughly 110 pounds when filled.
Less expensive alternatives are available, provided they are certified to meet GM and Chrysler specifications. These include AMSOIL Synthetic Synchromesh Transmission Fluid, Pennzoil Synchromesh Fluid, Royal Purple Synchromax, Royal Purple Max Gear, etc. The NV3500 5-speed is very sensitive to these specific fluids, which leads to issues or damage when owners try to use cheaper and more readily available transmission fluids found at their local auto parts store.

Some think that 5W30 engine oil is an adequate substitute, because they share the same viscosity, but engine oil lacks the additives required for manual transmissions. Many mistakenly use off-the-shelf Dexron red ATF, because so many other modern manual transmissions use it. But this also does not contain the additives the NV3500 needs and will cause damage. Standard gear and axle lubricants like 75w90 should also not be used because their additives can etch the bronze synchronizers, while the thicker viscosity oil will not flow properly into the bearings.

The NV3500’s Short Comings
The gear ratios in the NV3500 make it less than desirable in performance applications and swaps, but the synchromesh design and sloppy shifter design also hamper the manual-transmission experience. The synchro design in the NV3500 is the same kind of design that had been used in truck transmissions made decades before it, so it will only tolerate slow and patient shifting.

The NV3500 was only rated for 300lb-ft, which is why GM never installed one behind the 5.3 or larger LS engines. Our own project, Ol’ Cotton, was able to make one of these five speeds live behind a 450-horsepower 5.7 LS for a few years by practicing gentle shifting, instead of trying to bang-shift the NV3500, before eventually swapping to the superior Tremec Magnum 6-speed. Many report that the NV3500 can handle 400 horsepower reliably as long as it is still shifted slowly like an old man’s truck; no power-shifting like a fire-breathing Camaro or Corvette. Many NV3500’s suffer failure from broken shift forks from owners trying to shift as quick as possible.
The NV3500 also suffers from a poor input shaft bearing design. Instead of an open roller bearing that is lubricated by the transmission fluid, the NV3500 uses a sealed input shaft bearing that is known to fail prematurely, noted by a growling or howling noise during operation. The repair requires completely disassembling the transmission, and there are no upgraded bearing or designs to keep failures from happening in the future.

Considerations For Swapping
The first challenge if you choose to use one of these transmissions in your next GM or Dodge V8-powered project is the overall bulky size. This can make floor pan and transmission clearance difficult in some swaps. Also, the bellhousing is part of the case and cannot be swapped out. So if your engine does not have the Chevrolet V8 or Dodge V8 bellhousing bolt pattern, you might be out of luck.

Another limiting factor to using the NV3500 in a swap application is the clutch hydraulics. The NV3500 was only offered with a slave cylinder to actuate the throwout bearing. This won’t pose much of a challenge if your project vehicle also has a hydraulic clutch system, but could be difficult and costly if your project has cable or mechanical clutch linkage.
As stated before, the shifter for the NV3500 is devoid of positive feedback and clunky, and there aren’t really any great aftermarket options available for a good shifter. Also, the shifter is fixed to the case very far forward, closer to the firewall than the opening of your swap project’s console. Most of the time, the shifter will end up coming out from underneath the dash in a car.

Getting A Second Opinion
By now, you may have come to the same conclusion as most after reading all of this: the NV3500 is a junk transmission. After all, we swapped ours out in Project Ol’ Cotton in favor of the far superior Tremec Magnum 6-speed. But in reality, the NV3500 5-speed is perfectly decent for what it was designed for: A low-powered light-duty pickup. But if you’re looking for a cheap way to manually shift your next LS-swapped RX7 or V8-powered muscle car, it may be best to look somewhere else and leave the NV3500 in the junkyard.
