1967 Buick Riviera GS: A Serious 485 HP Sleeper For Sale

A 1967 Buick Riviera GS just crossed the auction block on BuyTheCar, and it is not the quiet luxury coupe most people expect when they hear the word Buick. Under the factory hood sits a 430ci Wildcat V8 pushed from a stock 360 horsepower to a reported 485, and that number alone should tell you this car got the attention of someone who actually knew what they were doing under the hood.

Buick only built 4,837 GS-optioned Rivieras out of more than 42,000 units for 1967. The Gran Sport package added a heavy-duty suspension with stiffer springs and firmer damping, along with GS badging on the fenders and decklid. This example was restored about six years ago and reworked from the ground up on the performance side, so what left the factory as a comfortable cruiser now runs like something with a real chip on its shoulder.

What Makes This 430 Wildcat Different

The block is still the factory Wildcat 430, but the top end tells a different story. Edelbrock aluminum heads and an Edelbrock Performer intake replaced the stock cast-iron pieces, and an MSD electronic fuel injection system handles the fuel side instead of a carburetor. That combination is what takes the horsepower from a factory-rated 360 to the reported 485 this car is claiming now. Exhaust runs through a 2.5-inch dual system with Flowmaster mufflers, so it should have a voice to match the numbers.

Power gets to the ground through a TH400 three-speed automatic with a performance shift kit, spinning a Positraction limited-slip diff with 3.70 gears. That gear set favors acceleration over highway cruising, which fits a build meant to be driven hard, not babied.

1967 Buick Riviera GS Suspension And The Sleeper Factor

The factory heavy-duty GS sport suspension is still doing the work here, riding on 18-inch Accio wheels wrapped in Michelin Pilot Sport A/S 3 tires, 235/40 ZR18 up front and 235/55 R18 out back. That is a real upgrade over the factory rolling stock without pushing the car into show-car territory. Power steering and enhanced power brakes round out the chassis, so the upgrades feel intentional rather than bolted on for looks.

From the outside, this Riviera keeps every bit of its second-generation identity. The “W” shaped front end, the fastback roofline, and the electrically operated hidden headlights, a feature specific to the 1967 model year, are all there under a fresh coat of factory-correct red. Step inside for black vinyl bucket seats, a console-mounted shifter, and the model’s signature rotating-drum speedometer, a detail that always surprises people the first time they see it in motion.

Where The Bidding Stands

As of this writing, bidding sits at $10,500, and the auction is still open on BuyTheCar. For a car carrying a 430ci Wildcat pushed to 485 horsepower, Edelbrock heads, MSD EFI, and a clean Washington title, that is squarely in sleeper territory.

If you’re into second-generation Rivieras or full-size GM muscle from the late sixties, this one’s worth watching. The GS badge and the drum speedometer are just the setup. The Edelbrock heads and the MSD box under the hood are the punchline.
