LS-Swapped 1969 VolksRod Is A Neck Breaker
This wild 1969 Volkswagen is far from your average Beetle. This type of build is nicknamed a “VolksRod,” a one-of-a-kind build that fuses vintage German styling with classic American hot rod attitude. At its core, this project blends the unmistakable curves of a ’69 VW Beetle with the cab of a 1949 Chevrolet pickup, sitting atop a completely hand-fabricated chassis. The result is an aggressive, chopped-and-channeled custom stance and a silhouette that breaks necks in traffic.

Traditionally Untraditional
Unlike traditional Beetle builds, this ride sits low and long thanks to a garage-built frame that integrates a full roll cage for added strength and safety. Powering the VolksRod is a 5.3-liter LS V8 with an LS1 intake manifold, a Comp Cams bumpstick, and custom exhaust at the front — a far cry from the original air-cooled flat-four at the rear. Paired to a TH350 automatic transmission with a manual valve body and a B&M pistol grip shifter, this combo delivers old-school muscle with simplistic modern reliability.

Hot Rod Chassis
The suspension setup takes its cues from classic street rods rather than anything VW or Chevy originally intended. Up front, a Super Bell drop axle with hairpin radius rods gives it that nostalgic hot rod feel, while out back, a custom four-link suspension and airbags manage the ride height over a Ford 9-inch rear axle. Wilwood disc brakes makes sure the stopping power keeps up with all the LS’s go.

No Show Queen
This Volksrod’s interior is just as custom. It features Bomber-style seats with racing harnesses, Dynamat sound insulation, engine-turned aluminum panels, and Autometer gauges — a blend of function and vintage race-inspired flair. It’s not just a showpiece, either. Since its completion last year, the owner has put over 4,500 miles on the car, driving it regularly and enjoying every minute of it.

It’s also no stranger to attention — this VolksRod has won awards at every show it’s attended, including Best in Show honors and the Mobil 1 Fan Favorite title at the 2021 Hot Wheels Legends Tour. It’s rare to see a build with this much creativity and execution — even rarer to see one that’s actually driven.
