The hot-rod pickup world has long been dominated by V8 swaps, with LS-powered S10s and small-block Rangers setting the standard. But straight-six engines have quietly been carving out their own legacy, especially when paired with boost. Toyota’s 2JZ, Nissan’s RB series, Ford’s Barra, and now GM’s 4200 Atlas are proving that six cylinders can deliver serious power without sacrificing durability and Sky Perry’s turbo Atlas is proof.

From $1,200 Colorado to Turbo Beast

YouTube creator Sky Perry of Cycle and Automotive has embraced that formula with his latest build: a turbocharged 4.2-liter Atlas-swapped Chevy Colorado. The project began with a $1,200 Colorado sporting a blown engine. Instead of following his usual playbook of V8 swaps, Perry sourced a junkyard Atlas six-cylinder for just $300 out of a Chevy Trailblazer for this turbo Atlas project.

Fabrication, Sweat, and Boost

Perry built the entire project on a budget, estimating he has invested about $7,800 total, including the cost of the truck. More importantly, he did all the fabrication himself, racking up an estimated 250 hours in the garage. Highlights include a custom turbo manifold to mount the VS Racing turbo, a MaxxECU engine management system, a Ford 8.8-inch rear end swap, and a 3-inch drop on lowered suspension. Even the transmission is a budget-friendly choice: the factory AR5 5-speed manual, adapted with a custom-machined flywheel and paired with a $100 store-bought clutch.

Dyno-Proven Results with Room to Grow

The result is impressive. In a video update posted over the weekend, Perry’s Colorado laid down 426 horsepower and 413 lb-ft of torque at the wheels, achieved with only 10 psi of boost. That puts the truck solidly into modern performance territory while keeping costs remarkably low.

Perry also had help from fellow YouTuber Calvin Nelson, better known as Nivlac57, who has built a reputation around Atlas-powered projects, including a 1,000-horsepower “AmeriBarra” swapped Camaro and a 10-second Trailblazer. With results like these, the Atlas 4200 is quickly gaining recognition as a budget-friendly, boost-ready alternative to more traditional swaps.
