AFR LS3 cylinder heads have always been a go-to when you need a head that actually flows. The new 270cc Mongoose CNC units take that reputation and push it further, built for LS3 and rectangle-port engines, where airflow is the difference between a fast car and a very fast car.

What Makes The AFR 270cc LS3 Head Different?

The short answer is valve size. AFR spec’d a 2.200″ intake valve on these heads, and that extra curtain area is not a small thing. More curtain area means the intake charge moves more efficiently through the port, which supports strong mid-range pull and lets the engine keep making power as the RPMs climb. If your LS3 has been leaving power on the table up top, this is the fix.

The CNC porting is what ties it together. Every port is cut to spec, so you’re not playing the lottery on flow variation from head to head. That consistency matters, especially on boosted builds where cylinder-to-cylinder balance shows up in the tune.

Built For Boost And Nitrous

AFR designed the 270cc LS3 Mongoose around a 6-bolt configuration. That matters because elevated cylinder pressures from a turbo or a big nitrous shot put real stress on the head gasket sealing surface. The 6-bolt pattern spreads clamping load more evenly and gives you better gasket stability when the boost comes on hard. If you’re running a traditional LS block with standard 4-bolt gaskets, AFR offers these same heads in a 4-bolt config on request. Either way, the head is engineered to handle more than a stock LS3 ever will.

What Does The 270cc LS3 Head Fit?

Naturally aspirated builds will pick up top-end breathing where smaller-port heads start to run out of steam. On a stroked LS3 with a healthy cam, these heads have the port volume to support the displacement without choking airflow. On a forced induction build, the combination of the 6-bolt sealing strategy and the 270cc port volume makes these a strong choice for anyone pushing 600 horsepower and up.

The Mongoose CNC, P/N 1847, heads are a direct upgrade over stock LS3 iron or even the factory aluminum castings. When the goal is to build an LS3 that breathes hard and seals right under pressure, this is what you reach for.

Our Take

AFR has been building quality heads for decades, and the 270cc LS3 Mongoose fits right in line with that track record. These AFR LS3 cylinder heads have big-valve intake, CNC consistency, and the 6-bolt option for high-pressure applications make this a head worth considering if your LS3 build has any real ambitions. AFR also offers a 4-bolt version on request for builders using traditional LS blocks and standard LS3 head gaskets.
