Mustang GTD Competition Rewrites Nurburgring Record Books
If you thought the Ford Mustang GTD already made its point at the Nurburgring, think again. After becoming the first American car to crack the seven-minute barrier at the Nurburgring Nordschleife, Ford went back with the Mustang GTD Competition and did what racers do best: find more speed.
The result is a new blistering lap time of 6:40.835, chopping more than 11 seconds off its previous time of 6:52.07. That officially cements Ford as the holder of the two fastest Nurburgring lap times ever recorded by an American brand, alongside the Ford GT Mk IV.

Seat Time Meets Engineering
Back in May of 2025, the GTD became the first American production car to set a sub-7-minuete lap time at the Ring a 6:52.07 lap, which also cemented it as the fastest American Production car to ever lap the famous course. Just a few short month later in July, the Corvette team dominated the 12.9-mile-long Green Hell and set three official laps with the C8 Z06 running a 7:11.826, the C8 ZR1 running a 6:50.763, and the hybrid C8 ZR1X running a 6:49.275. But Ford came back this month with the new GTD Competition package.
Once again, factory driver Dirk Müller was behind the wheel, putting down a lap good enough for sixth overall on the Nurburgring’s pre-production/prototype leaderboard. But what’s arguably more impressive is what happened next.
Ford Racing engineer Steve Thompson jumped into the same car and laid down a 6:49.337 lap, which is quicker than the GTD’s original record, with fewer than 40 total laps of Nurburgring experience under his belt. That says just as much about the car as it does the driver.
Where The Time Came From
Dropping over 11 seconds at this level doesn’t happen by accident. Ford attacked the GTD from every angle to create the GTD competition package.
More power was unlocked from the supercharged 5.2-liter V8, pushing output beyond the original 815 horsepower figure. Aerodynamics were refined with updates to the Drag Reduction System, a revised rear wing, added dive planes, and carbon aero discs to increase downforce without upsetting balance.
Grip was improved with new high-performance tires, while weight came down thanks to magnesium wheels, carbon bucket seats, and a lighter damper setup. It’s the kind of detail work that separates a fast car from a record-setter.

Limited Run, Big Demand
To mark the achievement and Mustang’s 62nd birthday, Ford is reopening applications for buyers hoping to get their hands on the GTD. The updated “GTD Competition” version will be offered as a limited, serialized run of street-legal cars, making it one of the most exclusive Mustangs ever built.
At this point, the Mustang GTD Competition isn’t just chasing records, it’s redefining what an American performance car is capable of on the world stage. And if this latest run proves anything, it’s that Ford isn’t done pushing yet.
