The Bite Is Back: 2026 Shelby Super Snake-R
Shelby American pulled the wraps off the 2026 Shelby Super Snake-R on August 13 during Collector Car Week in Monterey, California. This latest evolution in the Super Snake line is a purpose-built track weapon, starting life as a Ford Mustang Dark Horse rather than a standard Mustang GT. That foundation brings a host of advantages—higher base horsepower, the excellent TR-3160 six-speed manual transmission with a short-throw shifter, a one-piece aluminum driveshaft, and the option of a 10-speed automatic for those who prefer it.
Widebody Stance and Aggressive Aero
The Super Snake-R isn’t just a styling upgrade—it’s a complete transformation. The Dark Horse’s factory Brembo brakes are paired with lighter two-piece slotted rotors inside massive 20×11-inch front and 20×13-inch rear magnesium wheels. A widebody kit makes room for the oversized rolling stock, with production models getting metal rear panels and lightweight carbon fiber front fenders. Additional carbon fiber elements, including the hood, splitter, and aero components, keep weight in check. Despite the widebody conversion, supercharger, cooling upgrades, and harness bar, the car weighs only 116 pounds more than a base Dark Horse.
Race-Bred Suspension and Chassis Upgrades
Handling takes center stage on the Super Snake-R. Shelby replaces the factory rubber bushings with solid spherical bearings at all suspension points, complemented by urethane cradle mounts for improved stability. Fully adjustable coilovers with upgraded camber plates allow fine-tuning for different tracks, while a full harness bar system stiffens the chassis and improves predictability at high speed. Underbody bracing with integrated jack pucks adds convenience and rigidity.
850+ Horsepower of Dark Horse Fury
At the heart of the Super Snake-R is a supercharged 5.0L Coyote V8 producing over 850 horsepower on 93-octane pump gas. Shelby’s tuning ensures the setup remains fully serviceable at Ford dealerships, combining race-worthy performance with everyday reliability. “The 2026 Shelby Super Snake-R was optimized at every level using the best components available to create a dominating track star,” said Gary Patterson, Shelby American President.
Limited Production, Maximum Impact
With a starting price of $224,995, which includes the price of a Mustang Dark Horse as the starting point, the Super Snake-R will be a limited-production model, sold through authorized Shelby distributors with a 3-year/36,000-mile warranty and a full Ford powertrain warranty. Vince LaViolette, Shelby’s Vice President of Operations, sums it up: “If you are ready to be a track king, your car has arrived.”
