2026 Shelby GT500 Return? Shelby Teases Possible New Mustang
The Shelby GT350 and GT500 quietly exited Ford’s lineup before the end of the S550 Mustang generation, and since then, they’ve remained absent from the factory catalog. However, Shelby American has taken matters into its own hands. Earlier this year, the iconic tuner unveiled a new iteration of the GT350 and GT350R for the 2025 model year, independent of Ford and built under its own direction. Now, Shelby is teasing yet another S650-based performance model, one that could mark the highly anticipated return of the Shelby GT500.
Hints On Social Media
The latest hint comes via Shelby American’s official Instagram, where a dark teaser image shows only the rear silhouette of a new Mustang cloaked in shadow. What’s clearly visible is a towering rear wing, suggesting serious aero and even more serious intent. Alongside the image, Shelby posted a cryptic caption: “Carroll Shelby’s favorite car was always ‘the next one.’ During Monterey Car Week, on 8.13.25, we unveil the next one.”

While Shelby hasn’t confirmed what this new model is, speculation is swirling that it could be the 2026 Shelby GT500. There’s plenty of circumstantial evidence to back that up. Ford has been spotted testing multiple prototype S650 Mustangs in recent months, many of which were outfitted with carryover GT500 components from the S550 era, including larger brakes and widened bodywork. These sightings, combined with insider rumors, strongly suggest that a new flagship performance variant is deep in development.
But Is Ford Involved
What remains uncertain is whether Ford will actually call this new car the GT500. Reports dating back to 2024 hinted that Ford was considering retiring the GT500 name in favor of a new badge to signal a fresh chapter for its high-performance pony car. Still, a leaked United Auto Workers memo from earlier this year, later confirmed by a trusted news outlet, revealed plans for a new engine production line at the Dearborn Engine Plant. That line is reportedly dedicated to a powerplant codenamed “Legend,” specifically designed for the next-generation GT500.
All signs point to something big debuting this August at Monterey Car Week. Whether it wears the GT500 badge or not, it looks like Shelby (and potentially Ford) are preparing to unleash the next evolution of Mustang performance.
