
434 SBC Engine Dyno: 785 HP, 663 Lb-Ft, No Nitrous
A 434 SBC engine dyno at Competition Engines started as a simple oil leak fix and turned into a full teardown. Shannon’s small block Chevy showed up leaking from the sump and everywhere else, and once the crew got past the surface problems, they found mashed cam lobes and mashed lifters underneath. The engine had been built for street muscle with an aggressive cam and entry-level stock-diameter lifters, and it simply wore out from being asked to make power without being set up to survive the miles. This 434 SBC engine dyno session ended up telling a bigger story than a leaky sump.
Underneath the wear sat a genuinely good foundation. The block is a Dart tall deck, raised cam, wide pan rail piece built on a big block Chevy diameter, the kind of casting that’s tough to find on the market today. It runs a remote oil filter setup since the block has no provision for one built in, and the shop mounted it to the firewall with custom lines.
Head And Valvetrain Work That Woke The Combo Up
The stock heads flowed around 340 CFM and rolled over early in the lift curve, a problem we ran into ourselves when we worked through SBC Mayhem Heads: Straub’s 18° Double Hump Revival and saw how much airflow gets left on the table with a stock port job. Competition Engines sent Shannon’s heads to Porting Innovations in Whangarei, where a CNC program designed by Pete Murray brought the ports up to 376 to 378 CFM with 2.150-inch intake and 1.60-inch exhaust valves. That head work alone reshaped what this small block Chevy could make before it ever hit the dyno.
The original intake manifold had its casting numbers ground off and was sealed with a stack of mismatched gaskets, so the shop machined proper O-ringed spacers before switching to a different manifold entirely, port-matched but not opened up. Crower steel rockers with a 1.6 ratio capped valve lift at .710 exhaust and roughly .730 to .740 intake, a real limiting factor on a 434 cubic inch combination built to make this much power. A higher rocker ratio would have unlocked more lift, but the combo still had to work with what was already in the car.
Getting The Details Right Before Chasing Numbers
Past the heads and cam, the rebuild cleaned up a long list of small failures. The ignition leads were burnt and had to be fabricated new and shielded. The distributor had been machined for spacers in a way that made it unusable, so it was replaced outright. Oil capacity got dialed in and marked on the dipstick, since a small block Chevy running just slightly over or under on oil volume will show pressure drops at the top of the rev range, the same lesson we learned building our own SBC 350 carburetor setup on Project Street Reaper.

After swapping through three carburetors, the combination settled on a Pro Systems 1100 Dominator, which fixed a cylinder-to-cylinder distribution problem the original carburetor couldn’t solve. Testing the cam at both 106 and 108 degrees intake centerline showed 106 made more power. On pump gas with a vacuum pump installed, this 434 SBC engine dyno pulled 785 horsepower and 663 lb-ft of torque, with the torque curve hitting 650 lb-ft by 5,500 rpm. Blow-by stayed under 2 percent through the pulls, and the long 34-inch header primaries likely cost some rpm the shop didn’t have time to chase down.
Built around a stainless steel valvetrain and tuned to shift at 7,500 rpm, well short of its 7,720 rpm peak, this engine is set up to live in a street car instead of just posting a number on the sheet. That’s the real takeaway from this 434 SBC engine dyno: big power numbers only matter if the combination is built to survive the drive home.
