Chief Engineer Says ZR1 Nurburgring Lap Time Is “Coming Soon”
The Nurburgring Nordschleife remains one of the world’s most iconic test tracks and the ultimate benchmark for modern high-performance vehicles. For fans of the Corvette ZR1 and the upcoming ZR1X, the biggest question now is whether GM’s 1,000-plus horsepower flagship has set a lap time worthy of that reputation and how soon will we hear about the Corvette ZR1 Nurburgring lap time.

According to a new interview with CarBuzz, Corvette Chief Engineer Tony Roma confirmed that lap time data does exist for the C8 ZR1 at the Nurburgring. However, GM isn’t ready to reveal that time, at least not yet. “We did go and drive around the Green Hell, and we’re pretty proud of how the car did,” said Roma. “We’re going to release more details when the time’s right. Very soon, very soon.”
Roma also shed light on why the lap time has yet to be made public, despite the ZR1 being officially unveiled more than a year ago. “It’s more difficult than it’s ever been to set a record at the ‘Ring,” he told CarBuzz. “They charge you a lot of money to talk about it, and they want to have certified timing and scoring. You have to rent the track, get the safety marshals, pay the licensing fee, pay the filming fee. And if your day rains, oh well. We are not based in Stuttgart, so we can’t just go back next week. That’s why you haven’t seen us set a lap record attempt.”

That doesn’t mean the effort isn’t serious. With the Corvette ZR1 and ZR1X both expected to push past the 1,000 horsepower mark, speculation about their Nurburgring capabilities has only grown. While dethroning the current overall production car record, held by the Mercedes-AMG ONE with a 6:29.1 lap time, is unlikely. Roma hinted that Chevrolet’s target might be more realistic.
In particular, attention has turned to the Ford Mustang GTD, which recently posted a 6:52.1 lap time in May. That currently stands as the fastest official Nurburgring lap for any American production car. For comparison, the Dodge Viper ACR’s 7:01.3 time from 2017 is still the second-best effort by an American vehicle.

“You can see the effort Ford had to put into the GTD,” Roma said. “And they had to go back twice to get decent weather. All I can say is, stay tuned.”
While GM has remained tight-lipped on the exact performance specs of the ZR1’s lap, the fact that testing has been conducted at all suggests big things are on the horizon. If the ZR1 does manage to dip below the Mustang GTD’s lap time, it could become the fastest American car ever to lap the Nurburgring and in the process, mark a milestone moment for the Corvette brand.
For now, all we can do is wait. But given Roma’s comments, it sounds like the official Corvette ZR1 Nurburgring lap time might be revealed sooner than we think.
