Toyota Expands GR Heritage Parts Program With 4A-GE Engine
Toyota is doubling down on its commitment to keeping beloved classics alive. Roughly five years after launching its GR Heritage Parts program, the automaker has announced it will now reproduce key engine components for the iconic AE86 Corolla Levin and Sprinter Trueno. Until now, the program primarily offered chassis and exterior parts, but this latest expansion introduces cylinder head and block sub-assemblies for the revered 1.6-liter, 16-valve 4A-GE engine.

Modern Updates, Community Input
Toyota says these aren’t simple replicas. Engineers reintroduced the parts using modern materials, advanced manufacturing techniques, and direct feedback from the enthusiast community. For instance, the intake and exhaust ports in the new block sub-assembly feature thicker walls—a direct response to requests voiced at Toyota-hosted events about the GR Heritage Parts Program.

The improvements go further. Cylinder heads now benefit from additional machining in the combustion chambers to help equalize compression across individual engines. A new coating process smooths intake port surfaces for improved airflow, while more cam cap knock pins were added for easier assembly.

Stronger, More Precise Blocks
On the block side, precision machining allows tighter tolerances than were possible 40 years ago. Toyota’s use of rigid cast iron, combined with a redesigned crank-cap structure guided by computer simulation, boosts durability significantly. New bosses and ribs in the casting also expand versatility, enabling the engine to mount transversely in front-wheel-drive applications in addition to the AE86’s rear-drive setup.

GR Heritage Parts Debut On Initial D Anniversary
Toyota plans to debut the new parts GR Heritage Parts at Fuji Speedway during the Initial D 30th Anniversary event in Japan. While fans attending the celebration will have first access, international buyers may face hurdles due to shipping limitations. Even so, Toyota now offers over 200 reproduction parts across eight models, reinforcing its dedication to supporting enthusiasts and preserving the brand’s performance heritage.
